Ghana’s under-20 national team have dethroned Nigeria to claim the gold medal in the women’s football event at the 2023 African Games.
The Black Princesses came from a goal down to defeat the Falconets 2-1 at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium on Thursday, March 21.
Goals from Tracy Twums and Mukarama Abdulai gave Yussif Basigi’s side the deserved win over the Nigerian ladies in the final.
The Falconets took the lead in the 22nd minute after Loveth Edeh pounced on a costly error by Ghanaian defenders.
She came close to doubling the lead for the Falconets in the 38th minute, but Afi Amenyeku saved the effort.
The first half ended with Nigeria leading from Edeh’s lone goal, with the Falconets being the better side.
However, the Black Princesses got back in the game after Twums levelled things up in the 76th minute
The game ended in a regulation time draw, but a goal from Mukarama Abdulai in the ninth minute of the first half of the extra-time was enough to claim the gold medal for the Ghana women.
Despite the loss, Nigeria’s Falconets remain the most successful team in the tournament’s history, with three gold medals in previous editions of the African Games compared to Ghana’s two.
